Lukewarm No More!
How many times have you felt like you have been slapped up the side of your head by someone preaching on being lukewarm!? To top it all, God is so disgusted with you that He is simply going to vomit you up and spit you out! Charming imagery isn’t it!
So, what is the truth about being lukewarm and God spitting you out. This is in the Bible! It is also written in RED, so these are words that Jesus Himself spoke. Makes it important for us to understand!
When reading and understanding Scripture be careful to never take just a section and base your understanding on that alone. Look at the surrounding Scriptures and the context of the whole passage and then look at it in context with the rest of Scripture. (And yes, YOU ARE allowed to check out and examine what any preacher or teacher has said for yourself. In the end Jesus is not going to call others to give an account for you, you are going to give an account for what you did with Him and His Word to you.)
Revelation 3:14 – 22 “To the angel of the church in Laodicea write: These are the words of the Amen, the faithful and true witness, the ruler of God’s creation. I know your deeds, that you are neither cold nor hot. I wish you were either one or the other! So, because you are lukewarm–neither hot nor cold–I am about to spit you out of my mouth. You say, ‘I am rich; I have acquired wealth and do not need a thing.’ But you do not realize that you are wretched, pitiful, poor, blind and naked. I counsel you to buy from me gold refined in the fire, so you can become rich; and white clothes to wear, so you can cover your shameful nakedness; and salve to put on your eyes, so you can see. Those whom I love I rebuke and discipline. So be earnest, and repent. Here I am! I stand at the door and knock. If anyone hears my voice and opens the door, I will come in and eat with him, and he with me. To him who overcomes, I will give the right to sit with me on my throne, just as I overcame and sat down with my Father on his throne. He who has an ear, let him hear what the Spirit says to the churches.”
Before Jesus ever addresses issues in your life that are right or wrong He is going to draw you deeper into a revelation and understanding of who He is. In the above passage Jesus is going to deal with the Church about being lukewarm, but before He ever does that He tells them who HE IS.
His FIRST concern is about you not knowing who He is!
This revelation of who He is, is the help that they are going to need in order to overcome the issues He is about to address. Then He deals with them about their issues, or where they are falling short. He uses some harsh imagery and it certainly has the power to catch your attention. That’s what it was designed to do. To wake them up and alert them to the deception of the wicked one around them. Finally, He tells them of the wonderful and amazing rewards that He has for those who overcome and make a stand for who He is.
This whole passage is about the tremendous love and concern that Jesus has for you and the great rewards that He has in store for you. It has nothing to do with rejecting you or casting you away. You are His, and you will always be His beloved. Yes, there are issues that He wants to address and deal with in you. He will teach you, correct you and guide you, using some sternness when necessary. All this is to PROTECT you from falling prey to the enemy and losing that which Jesus so dearly wants you to inherit.
Over the next few days we will continue to look at the glory of Jesus in His letter of love to us.
May you become joyfully fervent in your pursuit of Him 😊
