Does God go to war and if He does what does it look like?

In these troubled times, where nations are fighting an invisible enemy called Covid-19 and economic chaos it becomes very important for you as one of His saints to understand your Saviour and what He is doing. When you do not understand your own God in all this then your faith will be weak, and fear will have an easy time dominating you.

In Jesus’ letters to His church in Revelation you will notice that He warns them of the dangers they will face and how to deal with them. Some trouble came because of their faith in Him and they were persecuted for it, and other trouble came because of the sin within the camp. However, in EVERY case, Jesus comes to reveal Himself to them and shows them how to overcome the enemy and receive the rewards for obedience to Him.

Grace, which I do not believe we even understand yet, is the fullness of God’s love in action. Grace is God’s abundant and abounding mercy and love towards His creation, which is every human being and every other living thing. When Jesus died and rose again, He stripped Satan of all power and authority. Knowing this is important because it empowers you to fight against your enemies.

For the grace of God that brings salvation has appeared to all men. It teaches us to say “No” to ungodliness and worldly passions, and to live self-controlled, upright and godly lives in this present age, while we wait for the blessed hope – the glorious appearing of our great God and Saviour, Jesus Christ, who gave Himself for us to redeem us from all wickedness and to purify for Himself a people that are His very own, eager to do what is good. Tit 2:11-14

This is a description of how God goes to war against the forces of corruption. He does this through His grace which He demonstrates through saving those He has redeemed from all wickedness and to purify them for Himself. Jesus wages war by bringing you into the knowledge of who He is and who you are in Him. And He does this through the sword of His mouth, His doctrines, which we saw are rooted in His forgiveness. Jesus uses His grace and forgiveness to teach you how to deal with your enemy.

Look at His letter to Pergamum. He has already addressed the issue He has with them holding to worldly doctrines and sinful passions. But in His passionate love, He will come and discipline them if they do not repent and turn towards Him and accept His doctrines. Sounds like what Paul was telling Titus.

Revelation 2:16 So repent then, or I will come quickly to war against them with the sword of My mouth.

Satan, the god of this world, the god of destruction, sin, and death, also wages war, however, he is limited to the things of this world, which include sickness, disease, poverty, etc. The works of the devil, which Satan does to wreak havoc and death in the lives of people and creation, Jesus overcame through His death and resurrection.

Please note, Jesus is not at war with the devil. He is at or, or in a state of discipline with His people that have aligned themselves with the doctrines and passions of the devil. In the same way, Satan is not at war against God. He has already lost to God. Satan is at war with the saints! This is why Jesus is so firm with the saints that refuse to repent – or take on the mind of Christ so that they can live holy and pure lives.

It is humanity that is at war. Some are waging war on behalf of Jesus Christ and His kingdom, and others wage war on behalf of Satan. This war is first and foremost waged in the heavens, long before it manifests on earth in either sickness and disease or health and healing; lack and poverty or wealth and prosperity, etc. The question you need to ask is whose side are you on? Who has control of your mind? Who has captivated your imagination? Whose opinion or doctrines do you give voice to?

The truth is that all the kingdoms of this world, every nation, every tribe, and every tongue, belongs to Jesus Christ. He is King of Kings and Lord of Lords. However, not everyone on the planet is considered a king and a lord to God, only those who are a part of His family. And it is to His family, the people He calls “the saints” that have a right to His inheritance. He removed Satan’s legal rights over the kingdoms he stole from Adam. He is now the second Adam and the kingdoms belong to Him. But His original plan was for the sons of Adam to have these kingdoms. Today, the sons of the second Adam, the saints, are the legal heirs to the planet, its kingdoms, and the entire universe. And our God takes great joy and delight in giving us the kingdom!

Satan is OUR enemy. We are equipped with all we need to overcome him. Satan knows this and he knows that for as long as he has control over the minds and earthly lives of the saints he will delay the day that Jesus returns to earth as the Ruler of all God’s creation.
