Power Connections: Why the Holy Spirit Never Lets You Run Flat
Travel is supposed to feel efficient when you’ve packed light. Durban first, then Cape Town. One bag, one plan, one laptop – the anchor of my business life. But halfway through the trip, the anchor betrayed me. The battery meter fell from green to yellow to red, and then… flatline.
No email, no notes, no work.
This was not supposed to happen. I planned my system with the precision of an engineer: three power connections in three different cities. One at home. One in Johannesburg. One with me. Fool-proof, I thought. But, unbeknown to me I only had half the cable. Frantically I sent a message to Dave to bring the other half. Deep sigh. All sorted.
However, my message never reached him. He arrived in Cape Town smiling, but without the cable. I arrived powerless. The laptop sat like a locked cage in my bag.
And in that moment, God whispered a lesson: this is how many of My people treat Me.
False Connection Points
We set up “charging stations” with the Holy Spirit like I set them up for my laptop. A prayer chair in the corner of the house. A Sunday morning pew. A playlist of worship songs priming the heart. These places are good. Sacred, even.
But when they’re unavailable, we panic. We say things like, “I can’t connect without my quiet corner.” Or “I didn’t make church this week, so I’m dry.”
We lie to ourselves believing,
- God is confined to a socket.
- His presence must be accessed at a fixed location.
- You must remember to pack Him before you travel.
But Jesus said:
“And I will ask the Father, and He will give you another Helper, to be with you forever—even the Spirit of truth.” (John 14:16–17)
Not sometimes. Not in one room. Not in one city. Forever.
The Spirit Is Already Loaded In
However, the Holy Spirit doesn’t wait in your living room. He is not a cord coiled in the corner. The Spirit is your internal power source.
He loaded Himself into you the moment you believed. He doesn’t get left behind. You cannot misplace Him in your rush to board a flight.
Paul puts it like this:
“You, however, are not in the flesh but in the Spirit, if in fact the Spirit of God dwells in you.” (Romans 8:9)
Dwells. Not visits. Not occasionally checks in. He lives in you. His presence is continuous.
The Spirit as Living Current

Think about electricity. You don’t see the current. You see its effects; light flooding a room, a kettle boiling, a fan turning. The Spirit works the same way. His power animates you whether you “feel” it or not.
Jesus said in Acts 1:8:
“You will receive power when the Holy Spirit has come upon you.”
Not if. Not maybe. You will.
When you turn your thoughts toward Him, you’re not waiting for Him to arrive, you’re connecting to the light cable within you.
Practical Ways to Stay Aware of His Connection
- Breath Prayers – Inhale and whisper, “Come, Holy Spirit.” Exhale and whisper, “I belong to You.” You’ve just prayed in less time than it takes a traffic light to turn green.
- Portable Praise – Sing a line of worship under your breath in the grocery aisle. The song is not the connection; it is the reminder.
- Scripture Recall – Carry one verse in your pocket. Philippians 4:13 can power a whole week if you return to it again and again.
- Ask Simple Questions – “Holy Spirit, what are You doing here?” Whether in a boardroom, on a plane, or at the sink, He will answer.
What if I Don’t Feel Connected?
Feelings are slippery. They rise and fall like signal bars on your phone. But the Spirit is not Wi-Fi. He is not weaker in some rooms and stronger in others.
Romans 8:26 tells us that even when we don’t know how to pray, the Spirit intercedes for us. That means connection is deeper than emotion—it is covenant.
What if I Sin? Does He Unplug?
No. The cross was not a part-time warranty. The Spirit may convict you, yes. He may grieve. But He will not abandon.
David cried in Psalm 51:11, “Do not cast me away from Your presence, and do not take Your Holy Spirit from me.” That was the prayer of an Old Covenant king. For us, under Christ, the Spirit remains. He convicts to restore, not to disconnect.
Modern Parables of Power
If I could rewrite my Durban-Cape Town story with divine truth, it would look like this:
- The laptop would never go flat.
- The power would be built into its design.
- The connection would follow me like Bluetooth headphones auto-pairing wherever I walked.
And that is precisely how God designed His Spirit in you. Always present. Always pairing. Always alive.
The Joy of His Company
When my laptop died in Cape Town, my life ground to a halt. But the Spirit is not a fragile cable. He doesn’t rely on your memory or your husband’s luggage. He doesn’t flatten when you forget Him for a moment.
He delights in you. He laughs with you. He guides you because He wants to. He thinks you’re fun.
So today, stop worrying about sockets. Whisper His name. Smile. Because the power connection you need is already switched on.
Stay connected 😀
Frequently Asked Questions
What if I’m too busy to pray?
Busy is not the enemy of prayer, it is the stage on which it belongs. The Holy Spirit does not stand at a desk tapping His foot until you clock in with a full hour. He walks with you into the grocery store, sits in traffic with you, and stirs in your chest while you fold laundry. Whispering “Help me” counts. A sigh counts. A single sentence spoken into chaos counts. He does not measure connection in minutes but in attention. When you turn your thoughts toward Him, even for a breath, He answers. Prayer is portable. So is His presence.
Can I lose the Holy Spirit?
No. You may feel distant, you may ignore Him, grieve Him, or even run from Him, but you cannot lose Him. Scripture says you are sealed with the Holy Spirit the moment you believe (Ephesians 1:13). A seal is not a sticker that peels off under stress, it is a royal mark that declares ownership and protection. You belong to God, and His Spirit remains in you, not as a renter who may leave but as a permanent resident. He convicts when you stray, but conviction is proof of His presence, not absence. If you still hear Him, you have not lost Him.
How can I tell if it’s the Holy Spirit or just my own thoughts?
The Holy Spirit’s voice carries the sound of Christ. He will never contradict Scripture, never glorify self over Jesus, and never leave you drowning in condemnation. His words bring clarity, peace, and courage even if they challenge you. He often whispers in ways that feel gentle but carry undeniable weight, a wisdom not born of your own mind. If what you hear drives you to fear, shame, or despair, it is not Him. Test the voice against the Word, look for the fruit of peace, and remember this: the Spirit’s voice always leads you closer to Christ, never further away.
