Smyrna 6

Do the words “in the Beginning” mean the beginning of time? Was time the first thing that Jesus created? Does our understanding of something beginning at a particular point in time on earth have the same meaning in heaven, where God sits in eternity? When Jesus says He is the Beginning and the End is He referring to time?

Firstly, the word “in” does not mean start, it is a functional word used to indicate a location, an inclusion, or a position within limits. Therefore, IN the Beginning refers to a PLACE or location called “‘The Beginning.” For example, “In South Africa.”

The word “the” is a function word before a proper name of a person, place or thing. It also indicates the distinctive characteristics of a person or thing.

Jesus introduces Himself as the “Beginning.” In other words, He is the place or the beginning from which He created all things in heaven and on earth. So, we could say that, “In Jesus God created the heavens and the earth.” Now, Jesus is not a point in time, He is eternal. He exists outside of the realm of time. He exists in the eternal NOW.

Time has its beginning or starting point in the One who is called “The Beginning.” Time is not the beginning of God; it is a creation that begins or has its starting point in God.

Colossians 1:15-17 Christ is the visible image of the invisible God. He (The Beginning) existed before anything was created and is supreme over all creation, for through Him (The Beginning) God created everything in the heavenly realms and on earth. He (The Beginning) made the things we can see and the things we can’t see – such as thrones, kingdoms, rulers, and authorities in the unseen world. Everything was created through Him (The Beginning) and for Him (The Beginning).  He (The Beginning) existed before anything else, and He (The Beginning) holds all creation together. (NLT)

Therefore, the beginning is a person and place that exists in God.

John 1:1-4 In the beginning (a place in God) the Word already existed. The Word was with God and the Word was God. He existed in the beginning with God. God created everything through Him, and nothing was created except through Him. The Word gave life to everything that was created, and His life brought light to everyone. (NLT)

Jesus is the Word, but He also calls Himself the Beginning and the End. So, I am going to rewrite the above Scripture using the Beginning and the End instead of the Word.

In the beginning (a place in God) the Beginning and the End already existed. The Beginning and the End was with God and the Beginning and the End was God. He (the Beginning and the End) existed in the beginning with God. God created everything through the Beginning and the End, and nothing was created except through the Beginning and the End. The Beginning and the End gave life to everything that was created, and His (the Beginning and the End) life brought light to everyone.

When God talks about “the beginning” He is not referring to the beginning of time but to Himself being the start and the finish of everything that has been created, including you! You are a masterful creation that God has created in Himself. You have your beginning and your end IN Him.

You are His masterpiece which He planned and purposed before time, in the Beginning, over whom He is currently hovering/brooding as He forms and fashions you into the perfect image of Himself. (Eph 2:10)

You are loved and highly prized by your Creator. 💖
