Magic of tongues: Part 1
I awoke this morning with the words “The magic of tongues” dominating my thoughts. As they came, I saw single flames of fire, all varied sizes. Each flame was alive and held the shape of a symbol with in it. They moved toward one another, then apart, forming words as they did so.
I was acutely aware they were dancing in the presence of the Father.
As I watched, a strange sense of joy oozed through my soul. The words “the magic of tongues” repeated themselves, over and over. I wondered why the Holy Spirit was using the word magic. This isn’t a word I would ever have used. Neither would I have dared to associated it with God. And yet, there they were.
Finally, with coffee in my hand, it was time to look up the word magic.
Before You Panic at the Word “Magic”

Now, before you, like me, get all freaked out by the word magic, pause for a moment.
Everything, especially language, has its origin in Christ Jesus. Words did not begin with Satan. They did not come from fear. They came from God. Yet as Christians, we often become bound by words because of the belief systems attached to them. Some words, like magic, carry fear simply because we’ve been taught to fear them.
In doing so, we give the devil more credit than he deserves, as if he is some powerful being equal to our Father. He is not. He has no creative power of his own. He has no “magic” power. The only power he uses is borrowed, stolen, or twisted from what already belongs to God and, by extension, to us.
Think about this. Satan relies on deception. He bends the Truth; he doesn’t replace it. Words are taken as they are and turned slightly, just enough to point in the wrong direction. That’s why he is called a liar, or deceiver.
What the Word “Magic” Means
According to the Mirriam Webster Dictionary, magic is defined as:
“Having supernatural power over natural forces.”
Throughout the Old and New Testaments, we witness prophets and saints operating in precisely this way. Seas part. Storms stop. Fire falls. Water obeys. Illness retreats. Death reverses. Creation responds.
Moses commands water and land.
Elijah calls down fire and shuts the sky.
Elisha multiplies oil, heals flesh, and alters gravity.
Jesus Christ speaks to wind and waves, multiplies food, raises the dead.
The apostles follow. The saints continue.
When you strip the fear away, what you’re left with is something remarkably familiar.
And God said, “Let there be light,” and there was light. (Genesis 1:3)
God speaks, and creation responds. Light appears. Order forms. Life begins. Language is not trivial. It is creative force. Whether for good or evil.
This is magic – supernatural power over natural forces.
Another demonstration of magic is the confrontation between Moses and Pharaohs’ magicians. Moses performed the same magic, except his was stronger. Pharoah’s magicians in turn performed some of Moses’ signs. This is pure magic against magic. Or light against darkness. Both used special words and action. We will take a deeper look later on.
Exodus 7 – 8
Where God Draws the Line

The Lord hates the perversion of language. Not language itself, but the way words are used to manipulate, deceive, curse, or create harm. Words are powerful, and power can always be misused.
Language is the source of creation, and creation flows from the mouth of Jesus Christ. The power to do what seems impossible comes from the Lord alone. It belongs to Him first. Then it is shared with human beings (not devils) made in His image and likeness.
This is why your words carry such high responsibility.
But I tell you that everyone will have to give account on the day of judgment for every empty word they have spoken. For by your words you will be acquitted, and by your words you will be condemned.” (Matthew 12:36-37)
Your words carry judgment because they are the power God gave you use to create life or death. This is rather sobering.
How Jesus Used the “Magic of Tongues”
It’s worth noticing something simple but mind boggling.
Language is the only power Jesus used to overcome the devil while He walked the earth. He did not argue. He did not perform rituals. He did not shout. He spoke the truth.
He answered temptation with words.
He healed with words.
He taught with words.
He prayed with words.
Language is how we communicate with God and with one another. It sits at the foundation of everything Jesus taught.
Where Deception Creeps In

The devil is most effective when we associate our words with darkness instead of truth. When we fear language, we silence ourselves. When we believe words belong to darkness, we hand our authority to him.
This prevents us from seeing what is already ours in Jesus. It keeps us from stepping fully into the kingdom of heaven, a kingdom which belongs to us now, in this life, and in the life which is to come.
The most powerful way to overcome deception is not to avoid words and ideas but to confront them. When we confront false language with the truth that is in Jesus, deception collapses.
Why This Matters for Speaking In Tongues
The gift of speaking in tongues sit right in the middle of all of this.
They are language born in God’s presence.
They bypass fear and control.
They reconnect us to creation-level communication.
When we speak in tongues, we are not borrowing power from an unknown source. We are stepping back into alignment with the source of language, Jesus Christ. Look at what Paul says:
“For anyone who speaks in a tongue does not speak to people but to God. Indeed, no one understands them; they utter mysteries by the Spirit.”
(1 Corinthians 14:2)
These mysteries strip the enemy of influence and brings us safely into the will of our Father, where communication with Him creates life, not fear and death.
These questions come up a lot when people start thinking differently about tongues and language. They’re here to slow things down, not push anything.
Frequently Asked Questions
These questions come up a lot when people start thinking differently about tongues and language. They’re here to slow things down, not push anything.
Is it wrong to use the word “magic” when talking about God?
No. The word itself isn’t the problem. Fear usually comes from how the word has been used, not where it began. Many words have been pulled away from their original meaning and loaded with fear, superstition, or control. That doesn’t mean the word originated there.
Language began with God. Before fear existed, before deception entered the world, God spoke and creation responded. Words brought light, order, and life. This tells us something important. Language isn’t dangerous. It’s powerful.
Using the word magic here isn’t about celebrating something dark. It’s about reclaiming wonder. It points to God doing what feels impossible through spoken language. When God speaks, things change. That is magical, mysterious, even surprising, but it isn’t evil.
What matters most isn’t the word itself, but who defines it. When fear defines our language, we shrink back. When God defines our language, faith and wonder ignite.
What if tongues feel strange or uncomfortable to me?
That’s very normal.
Tongues never move through rational, conscious thought. They are supernatural words given to you by God and bypass the natural mind, the words and thoughts you understand. Many people struggle here because they are accustomed to controlling their tongue. Releasing control can feel insecure and unfamiliar.
Please know God does not force this upon you. He invites you to partake in conversation with Him through it.
Speaking in tongues are not something you are pushed into or judged for. They are an invitation, not a test of spirituality. Some people experience them easily. Others grow into them slowly. Both are okay.
You do not need full understanding before you begin. Willingness is enough. Over time, fear fades. Familiarity grows. Confidence follows gentleness, not effort.
Why does language matter so much in faith?
Language matters because words shape how we understand God, ourselves, and the world around us. We don’t only think with words. We feel with them. We remember through them. Words can lift someone up or tear them down. A single sentence can bring peace or reopen an old wound.
Neither do words simply pass information from one place to another. They carry understanding, belief, and emotion. This is why careless words linger and kind words stay with us for years. God understands this deeply. He didn’t choose pictures or symbols alone to reveal Himself. He chose language.
God speaks. Creation responds. Faith begins with hearing. Relationship grows through conversation. Prayer is spoken. Teaching is spoken. Even silence in Scripture often follows words which have already been spoken.
Speaking in tongues remind us language is bigger than vocabulary. They show us communication does not stop where understanding ends. Tongues connect spirit to spirit. They allow us to speak when ordinary words fall short.
When language returns to God, its power returns to its source. Magic, the use of words to control natural circumstances, names the way God speaks and things change. Tongues is the supernatural force God has given to us to rule over natural forces. It’s time to reclaim what truly belongs to us.
